This is a story without time, place, or names. Reference makes this my story. Though it is my story, well, our story, it is also a cautionary tale. Though few would admit they’ve been there too, many before us have. With one simple decision, you could be there too.
This story lives only in my memories, filled with heartbreak, romance, and mystery. The mystery is in the why, and the why is something I may never know.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Is the person who steals to eat or get medication for a child just a dirty thief? How about the prostitute who turns tricks to keep a roof over her child’s head? Is she just a filthy whore? We are all guilty of doing something unforgivable to survive.
Survival has many different meanings and manifestations. Sometimes it is selfish, destructive behavior. All we’re trying to do is get through another day. To fix a hurt. To make the bad go away. It isn’t until later we realize the gravity of what we’ve done, and by then it is too late.
If only we could have a crystal ball to consult, to see the consequences of our actions. We make a choice in the moment, based on whatever internal or external factor is at play without the ability to see where it will take us.
Sometimes the consequence is quick. You pay the piper, rip the band-aid off, feel the pain and move on. But sometimes the pain that comes from the choice lingers for years. Sometimes the choice was so unforgiveable that you never recover.
